Notification and Reporting

Notification and Reporting of Environmental Incidents
Operators have a legal obligation under the Offshore Petroleum Greenhouse Gas Storage (Environment) Regulations 2009 to report incidents to NOPSEMA within a specified period of time, depending on the impact or potential impact to the environment. Operators should refer to the Notification and Reporting Guidance Note for further information.

A reportable environmental incident means an incident relating to the activity that has caused or has the potential to cause moderate to significant environmental damage. These are defined in the operators environment plan.

An operator is required to notify NOPSEMA as soon as practicable, and no later than 2 hours, of a reportable environmental incident occurring. The operator must provide a written notification as soon as reasonably practicable after providing an oral notification.

A written report is also required to be submitted to NOPSEMA as soon as practicable but in any case within 3 days of the incident occurring unless otherwise agreed with NOPSEMA.

Submit written reportable incident reports to submissions@nopsema.gov.au. If in doubt contact NOPSEMA in order to discuss further.

To notify NOPSEMA of a reportable environmental incident call: (08) 6461 7090.

A recordable environmental incident means an incident arising from an activity that breaches a performance objective or standard in the environment plan that applies to that activity and is not a reportable incident.

A written report must be provided to NOPSEMA as soon as practicable after the end of the calendar month, and in any case not later than 15 days after the end of the calendar month. The written report must contain all recordable incidents that occurred during the calendar month. If no recordable incidents have occurred during a particular month, a Nil Incident report must be submitted to NOPSEMA.

Submit monthly recordable incident reports to submissions@nopsema.gov.au.
