NOPSEMA is responsible for administering the Offshore Petroleum and Greenhouse Gas Storage Act 2006 (OPGGSA) and subsidiary legislation. 

The OPGGSA provides for NOPSEMA to regulate the health and safety, well integrity and environmental management of petroleum exploration and development activities in Australia's offshore areas beyond the first three nautical miles of territorial sea.
